Bill Wilson, founder of Metro Ministries in New York said, “It is easier to build boys and girls than to repair men and women. During the school year, Metro Kidz implements that philosophy by reaching hundreds of at-risk children and families in Dallas. Tuesday through Saturday, Metro Kidz meets in high crime, low income neighborhoods, in parks, public housing developments and empty lots. Every day, we bring hope and a positive influence to the children of the inner city.

Trust is paramount in effective inner city outreach, so each week every child who attends our programs is personally visited by a staff or volunteer. We take this opportunity to check on the child and to get to know the family as well. It provides an opportunity for strengthening the relationship between the family and the route worker, as well as helping to build trust.

Each Metro Kidz program is one hour long, and is high energy, action packed, and can make a life long difference in the life of a child. On the day of each program, we arrive in our Sidewalk Truck, which is a box moving truck that has been converted to include a stage, cabinets, sound system and projector. We set up, turn on our “Metro Music” and the kids come flooding our way. Each program consists of games, fun action songs and lessons that teach morals, values and life applicable truths. Each lesson is tailor made to be relevant to life in the inner city. At the end of each program, each child receives a snack.

Metro Kidz has been in Dallas since 1993, and is our original and anchor program. We believe that if you can reach a child, you can change an entire generation. The inner city is a challenging place to live. By bringing Metro Kidz to them, we bring hope for change to take place. A young lady who grew up in one of Dallas’ toughest housing projects shared this with us.

“It was a hopeless place to live. But when the Metro Truck would arrive, it would totally change the atmosphere. Something was different from the front all the way to the worst parts of the back. Hope had arrived at Rhoads Terrace.”
